ufos

I am running out of design wall for the hour glass quilt and will need to revert to the design floor soon.
I have 2 turquoise sides on the quilt with a third nearly ready.

I am trimming the 4 patch x blocks a little at a time. I didn't trim until I was ready to assemble, and....they didn't fit. I missed the note in the instructions to measure the block, and then cut the sashings 2 inches smaller. I just followed the instructions for the blocks to be 8 3/4. Mine are 9 inches at the smallest. So I am fiddling with that. I may have to cut all new sashings.  sigh...
I have made a decision about the border for wild and goosey and I have a plan, I just need to get to it.

string piecing magic

I had time for a little bit of string piecing this weekend. I used my singer treadle I sure know how to make a mess.

I needed 32 whole blocks by my count. Then I will cut them diagonally for 64 1/2 square triangles. These are all trimmed and de- papered. I was aiming for 8 inch square but the phone book wasn't that big so these were trimmed to 7 1/2 inch square. I can't believe how quickly these blocks were finished while I was treadling away.

I am aiming for making this quilt that I only have a picture to show how to make. I had already made a set of blocks for this quilt, but I cut them diagonally twice so the strings didn't make it visually. I decided I would try again to see if it really made a difference in the look of the quilt.

stash report May21, 2017

Isn't this wonderful? It is old enough that it is only 36 inches wide. The background color is very popular now. I found it at a flea market.

Judy at Patchwork times has decided to retire from her weekly stash report link up. And I have come to really appreciate it as a way to keep track and journal what I am doing. I realize I can still do the report for myself, but I enjoyed checking in with others to see how they are doing. sigh...
So if you stop by here and have a stash report send me the link.

green leaves

I made a few flying geese to see if that is what I want in the border, and I think I like the zig zag better - you? I could do both, but then we are missing the point.... those great wild and goosey blocks are the center stage not the borders.

I have grown a few green leaves for the cutting garden for the rainbow scrap challenge. I sure enjoy following the colors and adding a little bit at a time to a future quilt.

Oh the yellow iris is out to play with her friends the green leaves.

I have a new spring t shirt - I just love the saying

wonky wishes top

Lots of great suggestions for bordering wild and goosey- thank you so much, but I am still just staring at it.

During my hangout with my daughter, I was able to complete the sewing for wonky wishes. Bonnie Hunter didn't use a border, so I won't. It is ready to be prepared for quilting. I can't believe it is done. There is supposed to be agonizing over borders, right? This wasn't even on the list for this month.

I found this buried in a scrap box. I think I will add it to my already long list for maybe someday. I obviously bought it at goodwill. But, it doesn't take up much room, so rather than get rid of it, I will add it to a project box. That way I can be surprised by it again someday. Cleaning out is difficult for me. I still believe I am going to do everything.

I have the top row and a side row on the hourglass leader/ ender in turquoise. Making the corner is a little puzzle. I can sew 2 colors and a neutral willy nilly but when I reach the corner, I have to think a little differently.

vintage blocks

I unearthed some vintage blocks in my semi cleaning. I take forever to finish cleaning, because I want to stop and work on what I find. The word "just" messes with my head. I will JUST sew a few seams. I will JUST cut  a few scraps. And then the birds will sing and the clouds will part and I will succeed.
These blocks were machine sewn, and rather badly. Every block was a different size. I wanted to use the fabric - they are so cool - but I really didn't want to unpick 24 blocks. Then I realized I could trim them  to the same size and cut them apart at the same time.  Wooho - I will JUST do that. and JUST sew them back together.

I decided 4 1/2 inches would fit just about all of them.

Such fun fabrics. I wish I new the time frame. It was before my sewing experience.

wonky wishes

Still no decision on the border for wild and goosey. I tried a navy, a lime green and a zig zag pieced border. Still not sure.

At my small quilt group I was able to web the top for Wonky Wishes. It's still hard to get a real picture of what it will look like, but I like it so far. I did 5 rows across and 6 down. I started this in 2012, long before there was a pattern.

These are the mother's day basket flowers from My oldest and family

along with stripey tomatoes with a good start for the garden.

We went from too wet to do anything in the garden or lawn, to dry as the sahara desert over night. We really need to get everything in the soil and watered in earnest. But I love the blue skies, and moderate temps.

mixer cover

I needed a new mixer cover. The one I have was an actual kitchenaid cover, but it was never long enough.

I bought 2 quilted pillow shams from Goodwill for 99 cents, and used one to go over the mixer. I cut the second one to make the ends, using the other cover as a pattern.

And I love how it looks.

My husband gave me a yellow peony for Mother's day. I had not seen yellow before. I thought peonies only came in pink, burgundy, and white. It is such a great shade of yellow ( my favorite color)
Simple pleasures. He stacked and unstacked these for some time, much like Grandma and her fabric stash.

graduation

Our oldest son received his master's degree in education from Indiana University on Mother's Day. I am happy for him. But I didn't know anything could be that long LOL.

Pretty exciting. I finished a 4 patch posey quilt for a customer. I love her fabric and colors.

I had 2 microwave  potato bags cut out and finished them as gifts. I think it has made potatoes so quick and easy and really tasty, so I want to share.

stash report May 14, 2017

Happy Mother's Day to everyone.

Stash report

Fabric Used this Week:1 yard
Fabric Used year to Date: 178 3/4 yards
Fabric Added this Week:3 yards
Fabric Added Year to Date: 93 1/4 yards

Net Fabric for 2017: 85 1/2 yards more used than added

I have added 3 Moda scrap bags. I used to have an addiction to these. But I haven't found a successful use for them. They vary in widths, and are only a half a strip long. They aren't even half a jelly roll, and I want to keep them together just because. But they must appeal to the cracker jack prize lover in me.  And they are so pretty. so wonderful to pet. I was looking for something else, and that crazy little autobot on Amazon flashed these right before my eyes, dropped them in a magic shipping department and sent them to me. And I feel special that it was so considerate of me, a true friend, knowing me better than I know myself.

I don't know how to count this for my stash report , so I will just say 3 yards for the lot.
I have a full bobbin of spun yarn. I will make this a 2 ply so I need one more bobbin. It may take a couple of Sundays to get that far.

Strings and wings

I had every intention of trimming my string sashings for wonky wishes with this ruler, one at a time, It was the perfect ruler - just the right size.

But, then, genius kicked in, and I remembered I have a 3 1/2 inch strip die for my accuquilt.  woohoo.
I did 2 layers- perfect, then 3 layers, still perfect and 4 layers, no problem. A few turns and 58 blocks were trimmed.

I saw these adorable bunnies at the garden center. Surely, I can figure out a way to make them. yeah right.

Wild and goosey is at the top stage. I need to decide on borders. If I pick a print, there is a chance that it will become dated. That is why I love scrappy quilts. Any more scrappy, and it might just be too busy. I have looked at flying geese borders...I don't know yet. I love it, but, I almost wish I had used a solid for the cross blocks. I think the wild and goosey blocks would have shown out more. But, I love it. whoop whoop.
