slotted trimmer

I forget where I heard about this trimmer for HSTs. I had it in my cart forever, trying to talk myself into not buying it. I have a few bloc loc rulers for trimming HSTs once they are pressed, and I wasn't sure I needed to break from that system. I did buy them, and I am having a little trouble remembering to use it, since it is just habit to press them open and trim from there.

If I use my accuquilt to cut my pieces, I don't have any dog ears to trim, but there is a spot for that in the template for an easy trim. The lines are easy to use and see what to trim. And it was very accurate.

I found it easier to use in this direction, if I wanted to trim dog ears and the triangle without moving the template.

The only con for using a trimmer this way is for any mystery fabric, and, pressing afterward may make it wonky. I used the trimmer on a bunch 40s triangles I had found at a thrift store.

  1. I have never seen this ruler! I'm sure there are tons of new items in the shops that I never see or hear about as there are no shops here!

  2. Hi Maggie! I've not seen this ruler but have the Bloc-Loc rulers in three different sizes. I wonder if I need this one too?!! ~smile~ Roseanne

  3. I am the absolute worst when it comes to buying the latest greatest gadget, sticking it in a drawer, and forgetting all about it. I bought a couple of the Bloc Lock HST tools but I have yet to use them. Was intrigued by this tool you're showing today until I got to the end and realized that with this one, you're trimming BEFORE you press the HST unit open. That means there's no allowance for different fabrics and piecing threads taking up slightly different amounts of space in the seam, either. I think I'll stick with what I've got!

  4. I stared at the first picture for longer than I care to admit trying to figure out what the slots were for. I guess I was frowing pretty hard as my husband asked me what I was angry at...LOL! I told him I was trying to figure something out, but couldn't. I gave up and scrolled down... to see your next picture showed EXACTLY what the cut outs were for. I started laughing so hard. Thank you for the explanation! This looks like a nifty tool. Thank you for the demo!
